L'Entente Cordiale (agreement signed on 8 April 1904 between the United Kingdom and the French Republic) inspirated drawings like these, mostly with Marianne (France) and Britannia (UK) .
But sometimes it was Marianne with John Bull (snarking Prussian Emperor on the original second illustration, that was one of the main agreement reasons at first).
Edit : and I could add a few![link][link]
France was always a freakin' girl, even in royal days before Marianne's apparition. No difference between government and people, like Britannia and John Bull.Marianne is both. Her male counterpart, Jacques Bonhomme, once existed but soon forgotten.
And that's why it was always pictured as a lady.I was quite surprised when I discovered that France was male in Hetalia, but it's a bishonen ghetto after all.
I support Fruk, being an history nerd and an anglophile french.Just imagine the same with Arthur and Fem!Francis (Françoise, in Nyotalia.I've told you France is supposed to be female.)....Well it last since more than a century....
